Black Lace™ Elderberry

Sambucus nigra (Black Lace™ Elderberry)

Sambucus nigra 'Eva'

Patent: PP#15575

Black Lace™ is a stunning development in Elderberry breeding. Intense purple black foliage is finely cut, giving it an effect similar to that of Japanese maple. Extremely durable and adaptable it was the talk of the England's Chelsea Garden Show in 2003. The creamy pink flowers that bloom in spring contrast nicely with the dark leaves. In the fall, the blooms are followed by stunning blackish red berries, which can be harvested for making elderberry jam. If left on the plant the tasty berries are a welcome treat for birds and other wildlife. Cold hardy and easy to grow, Black Lace™ adapts quickly to most sites. Full sun is needed for the best color. Left alone it will reach a height of eight feet, but it can also be pruned back to suit other landscape settings.
