Our 2009 AARS Winner, Carefree Spirit™

Star® Roses

Beautiful, unique and proven to thrive

From the famous Peace rose introduction in 1945 to more modern, disease-resistant and low maintenance introductions, The Conard-Pyle Co. and Star® Roses continue to work with hybridizers all over the world to bring the most researched, tested, unique and beautiful varieties of roses to the market.

The Knock Out® Family of Roses, Drift® Groundcover Roses, the Romantica® Collection, Sunblaze® Miniatures and Meidiland Landscape Shrub Roses are just some of the roses that we have introduced over the years.

In the San Joaquin Valley of California, we grow over 5 million Star® Roses. We have a large selection of Hybrid Teas, Grandifloras, Floribundas, Miniatures, Shrub, Landscape, Climbers, David Austins and various tree roses.

The Conard-Pyle Co. and Star® Roses are proud to have so many roses chosen as All-America Rose Selections (AARS). For nearly 70 years, All-America Rose Selections' sole function has been to determine which new rose varieties can be recommended without equivocation to the public as rose varieties of top quality. To be chosen as an AARS Winner a rose must complete a two-year testing process in nationwide test gardens.

What Makes a Winner
AARS winning roses embody all of the characteristics today's homeowners desire in a garden plant. Each AARS winning rose excelled in an extensive two-year trial program where it's judged on everything from disease resistance to flower production, color and fragrance.

We conduct these tests in 23 gardens nationwide to represent all climate zones. Each garden is also given the care of an overage home garden so these roses aren't spoiled. If they can thrive during our testing, they will most certainly thrive in your garden.

Test Gardens
For nearly 70 years, All-America Rose Selections' sole function has been to determine which new rose varieties can be recommended without equivocation to the public as rose varieties of top quality. To be chosen as an AARS Winner a rose must complete a two-year testing process in nationwide test gardens.

AARS Winners are top performers in our 23 test gardens located throughout the country representing all climate zones. The rose varieties in these trials receive only as much care as your average home gardener would be likely to give. In fact, AARS members recently voted to remove fungicidal spraying for our shrub plants, to ensure that our AARS Winners are top performers, naturally.

Selection Process
Each AARS test garden has a judging panel that participates in our bi-annual scoring process. In this "blind process," judges do not know the breeder or introducer for the plants they're grading, and they're asked to submit scores by serial number.

In our test gardens, the roses are carefully evaluated on a number of criteria. In fact, the judges put many hours of observation into monitoring the performance of the top roses throughout the growing season. They grade each of the roses on the following characteristics:

• Novelty
• Form - of both buds and open blooms
• Color throughout the blooming cycle
• Aging quality
• Flowering effect
• Fragrance
• Stem/cluster form
• Plant habit
• Vigor
• Foliage
• Disease resistance
• Repeat bloom quality

Each winning rose bears the AARS red rose logo as a "seal of approval" that ensures gardeners that the plants will grow beyond expectations with little maintenance.
